Mavis Kumpaba, a first-year BSc. Agriculture student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been awarded a scholarship worth GH₵40,000.

This scholarship will cover her accommodation, tuition, and upkeep throughout her four-year academic journey at the university.

The scholarship, known as the Samuel Sarpong Scholarship, was established by Mr. Samuel Sarpong, an alumnus of the Faculty of Agriculture, to support underprivileged yet academically outstanding students.Samuel Sarpongs's Scholarship Award

The initiative seeks to nurture students who exhibit leadership potential and a strong commitment to giving back to society.

As a proud alumnus, Mr. Sarpong is passionate about making a difference in the lives of promising students.

He believes that even small efforts from alumni can significantly impact the academic and personal growth of talented individuals who might otherwise be unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.

“I believe that alumni of this University can in small ways ensure that these talented individuals are not denied the opportunity to realize their potential.

Mavis, I hope you never give up on your dream, never lose sight of your goals, and never underestimate the power of your potential. Make us all proud,” he said.

The award was presented on behalf of Mr. Sarpong by Prof. Emmanuel Lartey Kwame Osafo, who emphasized the importance of such initiatives.

He expressed his hope that this scholarship program would continue and inspire other alumni to extend similar support, given the significant number of needy students on campus.

Mavis, who lost both parents at a young age, is the eldest among her siblings and has been their primary caregiver. After completing Senior High School in 2020, financial difficulties prevented her from enrolling at the university.Mavis Kumpaba

Determined to pursue her dreams, she worked for four years to save enough money for her tuition. However, she could not afford on-campus accommodation and had to commute from home.

“I have no guardian, but I kept pushing forward until I was able to save for my school fees. Unfortunately, I could not afford a hostel, so I come to school from home every day. When I saw the scholarship notice, I applied and attended the interview, and here we are now. I am grateful for this opportunity, and I am determined to work hard to meet expectations,” Mavis remarked.

The Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, along with the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Fred Nimoh, commended Mr. Sarpong for his generosity and congratulated Mavis on her well-deserved achievement.

He urged her to remain focused and dedicated to her studies, emphasizing the transformative impact of education.

Also present at the ceremony were Dr. (Mrs.) Gifty Boakye Appiah, who chaired the committee, and Mrs. Ruth Bediako, Registrar for the Faculty of Agriculture.
