The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) continues to deepen its engagement with industry and public institutions, as part of efforts to ensure that academic research directly informs policy and practice.

In line with this vision, the Department of Fisheries and Watershed Management has intensified efforts to encourage students to undertake research with industry buy-in and collaboration. The approach has yielded positive outcomes, with the Department expanding institutional partnerships through applied research initiatives.

Mr. Nathaniel Dakpo, an MPhil Watershed Management student, presented his proposed multidimensional flood risk research to the Ashanti Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Kumasi. The visit was aimed at seeking institutional input into his research proposal ahead of data collection.

The Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, together with his technical team, received the presentation positively and provided constructive recommendations to strengthen the study. They welcomed the collaboration and affirmed their commitment to ensuring that the research supports NADMO’s disaster preparedness and response efforts.

The engagement builds on a working relationship established in 2025 between Dr. Benjamin Apraku Gyampoh of KNUST and NADMO. Mr. Dakpo’s research is supervised by Dr. Gyampoh and Ing. Dr. George Ashiagbor.

The study integrates flood susceptibility mapping, socioeconomic vulnerability assessment, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based risk analysis to enhance disaster preparedness and response strategies in Ghana. Following discussions, NADMO recommended the inclusion of additional flood-prone districts within the Ashanti Region and expressed willingness to provide relevant institutional data to support the research.

Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between KNUST and NADMO, noting that research should directly inform national disaster risk reduction, management, and resilience-building strategies.

Dr. Gyampoh reiterated KNUST’s commitment to bridging the gap between science and decision-making in Ghana. He emphasized that the University will continue to seize opportunities that align academic research with national development priorities.
