With the rapid increase in student numbers, lecturers have found it challenging grading examination scripts using traditional methods, which often delay the release of results.

In line with the university’s policy of establishing virtual examinations as a standard practice, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) has begun piloting computer-based exams, designating the final day of mid-semester exam week for virtual exams as a trial run to evaluate the system's effectiveness and feasibility.

Chairman of the Online Examination Committee, Prof. Victor Rex Barnes, emphasized the benefits of the system and its role in ensuring the fairness of examinations.Prof. Victor Rex Barnes

"With computer-based exams, marks are readily available since everything is automated. This significantly reduces the workload for lecturers and ensures timely assessment of students' performance.

Cheating is highly unlikely with this system. Each student receives a unique set of questions, and since everyone is focused on their screens, there’s little room for communication. If a student attempts to talk to someone, time runs out before they even realize it." he said.

He expressed his satisfaction with the implementation so far and assured students of its accessibility.

"Everything is going well. I would rate our success at 90%, and we aim to improve on the remaining 10%. Different computers come with different issues, but we have successfully managed to address them.

"Students without personal laptops are accommodated. The exams are conducted offline, so internet connectivity is not a concern. The server is localized, ensuring that the examination proceeds smoothly regardless of Wi-Fi availability," he added.

Students were enthusiastic about the new examination method. Edmund Fosu Asamoah, a first-year Agricultural Biotechnology student, shared his experience.Students having computer based exams

"With written exams, you have to manually shade your index number, and the slightest mistake can cost you marks. Sometimes, you might not get the score you deserve. With this system, all you need to do is click, and you're done."

Kweku Kyei has this to say, "The computer-based exam is very helpful and convenient. I would rate it 9 out of 10."

Beatrice Asiedua lauded the efficiency of the virtual exams. “The process was fast, and I even finished before time, allowing me to review my answers. It was super easy.

The College’s IT team was also present throughout the exams, providing technical assistance and ensuring a smooth experience for both students and Invigilators.
