The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) has held a meeting with JL Plantations, an innovative agro-tourism institution, and WES Trade Limited, a Malta-based company, to explore collaborative opportunities in agricultural technology, research, and knowledge transfer.

The engagement focused on a potential commercial venture where JL Plantations and WES Trade intend to apply advanced technologies to enhance agricultural productivity.

Discussions also touched on two key areas of research and development, integrating university-based learning and research into practical agricultural applications, and expanding this collaboration to include second-cycle institutions to deepen agricultural education across Ghana.

Representing WES Trade Limited, Dr. Daniel Opoku Mensah highlighted the shared vision of leveraging technology to tackle some of Ghana’s pressing agricultural challenges.

“We have challenges in the agricultural sector, particularly with crop pests, diseases, and water use. Our technology seeks to address these three areas, and we believe that partnering with the university to introduce this knowledge to students early on will create a lasting impact.

Through this R&D partnership, we can generate knowledge that becomes part of our agricultural heritage. It’s also an opportunity to help farmers, both large-scale and smallholders, apply technology to save time, improve productivity, and ultimately strengthen food security,” he said.

The Provost of the College, Prof. Dadson Awunyo-Vitor, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that partnerships between academia and industry are key to transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

The meeting featured presentations and open discussions on the framework for collaboration, including the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the partnership.

In attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Heads of Departments, and Faculty Registrars, who commended the initiative as a step toward bridging the gap between research, innovation, and practical application in agriculture.
